Optimize usable measurement quality within welfare and safety constraints.
Hovering and coverage are different capabilities
Multirotors support hovering and constrained launch sites while continuously consuming power to remain aloft. Fixed-wing aircraft can suit broad coverage but have different low-speed and recovery constraints. VTOL designs add transition behaviour and additional hardware. Select the platform around the measurement and terrain rather than a headline endurance value.
Height determines target scale
For an ideal nadir camera over a flat target plane, GSD is approximately H × p / f, with compatible units for target-relative height, pixel pitch and focal length. Height above launch is not range to a canopy or hillside. Oblique views and distortion add error. This geometric relationship does not establish a welfare-safe flying altitude.
Speed trades against blur and overlap
In a simplified model, motion blur in pixels scales with ground speed × exposure time / GSD. Faster coverage interacts with exposure, frame rate and image overlap. Wind can change ground speed even with an unchanged speed setting. Inspect the resulting imagery and actual track rather than treating the programmed route as proof of sufficient sampling.
Measure endurance in the real configuration
Payload mass, compute power, wind, temperature, altitude, battery condition and return distance affect usable endurance. Test the deployed configuration with a justified return margin. Review automatic-return behaviour against obstacles and sensitive habitat. An automated recovery mode remains part of the flight design and is not a guarantee of a safe route.
