Measure cost per sufficiently reliable result to reveal the value of automation and field operations.

A cheap sortie can produce an expensive survey

Include equipment, training, approvals, travel, people, insurance, batteries, maintenance, processing, review, storage and repeat visits. Distinguish existing resources from full new-deployment cost. Treat previous annotation and model development consistently. Compare the effort required for the same management decision rather than the price of a sortie.

Translate model errors into labour

False positives can consume expected labour savings. A simple review-cost model is items reviewed × mean review time × labour rate. Misses may increase sampling requirements or uncertainty. Compare computation and human review at equivalent quality, using measured inputs or clearly labelled assumptions rather than marketing benchmarks.

The endpoint determines the comparison

A 2024 koala occupancy study identified cost-effective acoustic designs under its assumptions. Acoustic presence, individual abundance, location and body condition are different endpoints. Include ground methods, acoustic recorders, camera traps and satellite information among the alternatives. Select against the ecological question, not a preferred technology.

Test the assumptions that can reverse the decision

Vary annual volume, cancellation rate, review time, travel, battery replacement and data volume. Cost reduction—baseline minus new cost, divided by baseline—is not financial ROI. Payback needs incremental investment and annual net benefit. When utilization is low, compare shared capacity or contracted services with ownership rather than assuming purchase is necessary.
